On June 30, 2026, at the invitation of Encarnación Ruth Varela Rodríguez, President of the Official Association of Architects of Galicia (COAG), Academician Zhang Pengju from the School of Architecture at Inner Mongolia University of Technology delivered an academic report titled "Architecture Rooted in the Land: Building from the Place" in A Coruña, Spain. Hosted by the A Coruña delegation of the association, the event attracted numerous local scholars and architects. During the report, Academician Zhang deeply elaborated on the core philosophy of "building based on the land," emphasizing that architecture should profoundly respect the natural environment and take root in local culture.
In his presentation, Academician Zhang highlighted his representative work, the West Wusutu Village Community Center, which won the prestigious 2025 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Built entirely from locally recycled old bricks, the project achieves a perfect blend of low-carbon environmental protection and rural cultural context, showcasing to international peers the remarkable achievements of contemporary Chinese regional architecture in the field of sustainable development. The academic exchange was met with enthusiastic responses, which not only demonstrates the international academic influence of the university's architecture discipline but also carries significant importance for deepening the dialogue and cooperation in architectural culture between China and Spain.
